In this next lesson in our Beginner Figure Drawing Series we are going to start taking what we’ve learned so far and start taking things into our own hands. We are now going to be Composing the Figure. Composing is really about adding story into your sketches, about guiding the audiences eye in a specific way, about altering the figure to our needs. In this lesson we’ll look over some advanced gesture and construction techniques, expand what we’ve learned about balance, do some demonstrations, and as always we’ll finish the lesson off with a timed drawing session, but this time with an extra challenge.
In this lesson, we cover Stage 3 of figure drawing - Proportions. We'll break down the figure proportions from the front, profile and back. We'll also look at how we go about juggling it with our first two stages of Figure Drawing, Gesture and Construction. We'll also take a look at Balancing the figure and how to develop a Drawing Process for ourselves.
In this next class on Beginner Figure Drawing we start taking a look at a more advanced area of figure drawing and that is Clothing and Drapery. This is a very complex topic, and way too big for only one lesson, so this class is going to act as an introduction to the topic covering the basics of clothing and drapery construction and gesture. We'll have a closer look as to how folds are created and how they relate to the figure, as well as cover the different types of folds we are going to see. As always, we'll start with a lecture, followed by some demonstrations and at the end there will be a 20 minute timed drawing exercise session for you to complete. This can be a very tricky and frustrating area for beginner artists, so be patient with yourself in this more advanced class, and try to have fun with it!
In Lesson 14 of the Beginner Figure Drawing series we are moving on to the final area of the body we've yet to cover and that's the Legs. The construction of the Legs is not too dissimilar to how Arms are constructed, but they have their one unique gestures, articulation and purpose for our figure. As always the lesson will include a lecture, some demonstrations, and will be finished off with a 23 minute timed drawing session for you to complete.
In lesson 13 of figure drawing we'll finally be tackling the arms. In some ways, arms a little easier to draw initially, but things can start to get complicated once we start adding in rotation and muscle areas. So in this lesson we are going to break it all down and figure out the best approach to constructing them. As always, there will be a series of lectures, followed by some demonstrations, and at the end of it all there will be a timed drawing exercise session for you to follow. This lesson also works well with the How to Draw Hands lesson.
In Lesson 11 of our Figure Drawing series we'll take a look at a more detailed approach to how the Torso is constructed. In this lesson we'll cover the basic shapes and forms the torso makes, before going over the biggest areas of muscle which help give the torso its overall form. We'll also look at the Torso in gesture, differences between Men and Women torso shapes and finally finishing everything off with a 20 minute Timed drawing session.

In this lesson we'll breakdown the most often overlooked area of the figure and that is Feet. Feet are similar to hands in their structure, but offer their own unique challenges when it comes to drawing. This lesson will break down the basic shapes and forms that makes up the Feet, look at how to tackle them from different angles and perspectives, and will even have a closer look at hoes the Toes are constructed. After the lecture there will be some demonstration, followed by a 25 minute timed drawing session.
In this lesson, we'll continue on from our initial discussions about Gesture and Construction by covering the topic of Bending and Twisting our forms, and looking at how to go about measuring the all important Three-Quarter position.
Beginner Figure Drawing - Facial Expressions

In this next Beginner Figure Drawing lesson we'll cover the area that is going to give our figures more personality and that is Facial Expressions! Because we need to know a bit about how the face moves we are going to have to delve into the underlying anatomy for the first time. So we are going to spend most of our lecture going over these internal mechanics so we can understand how they move the muscles of our face. After which we will do some demonstrations of different expressions and then end everything as always with a Timed Drawing Session as well as follow-up demonstration. References used in the class are attached to Project and Resources. Let's get drawing!
